Alison Paradoxx -

Performance Artist / Poet

A stoic survivor of childhood burns, surgeries, scoliosis, eating disorder, and congenital disease, Alison’s work addresses issues of accessibility and diversity, and sparks debate on how we, as a society view physical, and mental disability. In doing so, she reclaims the term ‘disability’ to empower, and recreate her own self-narrative.

Her work focuses on the paradoxes of human nature, offering a glimpse into the cognitive processes behind recognition, and acceptance of disability in self, and the societal desire to ‘fix’ the broken body.

Alison explores the power of words, beyond the traditional poetry formats, making her work as accessible as possible to the D/deaf and hearing impaired, Blind and  vision impaired, and disabled communities, as a whole.

After winning the South Australian Poetry Slam in 2016, Alison went on to represent the state at the National Poetry Slam at The Sydney Opera House. Since then, she has performed as a feature artist widely throughout South Australia’s literary, and spoken word community, and been involved in a variety of collaborative projects including street poetry installations, youth mental health projects, and high-school workshops.

In 2019, Alison took her first foray into producing, with her self-produced/self-funded performance season of Alison Paradoxx presents Floral Peroxide for Adelaide Fringe 2019. The show quickly became a sell-out season, earning five star reviews. An encore performance was staged at the closing of Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Floral Peroxide was granted the huge honour of winner of The Graham F. Smith Peace Foundation Award, at The Adelaide Fringe Awards Ceremony, 2019.

Floral Peroxide was awarded a grant from The City of Melbourne to show at The Butterfly Club in May, 2019.
